I am loving this whole trying new food joints in Nairobi I am finding new favorites while I thought I did not have any favs coz I never really found any food that was worth drooling over. We went to Manor 540 for dinner on Wednesday. It was my second time there and I was more impressed this time round.
I first went to Manor 540 about a year ago with my brother and cousin. I was heavily pregnant and super hungry, we hadn’t ordered ahead of time and when we got there I remember informing the waiter that I was too hungry and they would need to bring me juice first before even taking any orders. The juice ended up taking about 30 mins to arrive, and this was after I complained. I was not one bit impressed. We ordered pork, plantains and managu that day. The food was nice but I did not get what the hullabaloo around their pork was. I had had better.
The Mr suggested we go there last Wednesday as he had never been, I always try and give a place a second chance. This time I called ahead and ordered. When we got there our food was ready but the Mr wanted saute potatoes which took an extra 15 minutes. So here was the experience
Manor 540 is located on Kanjata Road down the road from J’s Kitchen or up the road from the Elephant depending on which direction you are coming from.
Nothing to write home about in my opinion. They have parasols out in their garden, and quite a bit of sitting on the patio. The sitting inside is not much, they have couches inside which aren’t very conducive for eating.
The waiters are polite. Our server for the night was attentive and made sure we were well taken care off. Food does take a while so I would suggest you call ahead to order. You can find their number on their Facebook page.
Sorry for the low quality pics, Manor 540 is dark and the flash distorts colour.
The pork fry was amazing, definitely one of the best I have had in Nairobi. There is something they added to it, I just can not figure it out. That was the game changer. The onions had a spice blend that was just amazing
The Fish! Now let me start by saying that fish is never something I order in any restaurant, mainly cause it is largely disappointing but I am also not a fish fan. The buzz on Manor 540’s fish made me order it and the Mr loves fish. I ate half of one side of this fish. And carried teh rest home and had the other half over 2 lunches. It was that large and that good that I was even willing to risk getting a bit sick coz of over stayed fish LOL. This is the best fish I have had in a Kenyan restaurant hands down, it is only rivaled by some fish I had in Uganda.
The plantains were a bit bla for me, not sweet enough even though they are my favourite starch.
We also had mchicha was so good, but we did not eat much of, I think it would have been amazing with ugali and the fish. I added some spinach to it the next day and had it for dinner. We laos ordered some saute potatoes, the Mr hogged a whole plate so we ordered an extra plate.
We really enjoyed this meal. Downside was we over ate. But it was well worth it.
We spent KSh 4,100 on
1 kg pork fry
1 dry fish
2 saute potatoes
1 glass of juice
This is enough food for 4 people.
